By joining the ILUCIDARE Summer School, you will become engaged in a quest for answering such questions as:

  • How and under what circumstances does cultural heritage become a source of innovation?
  • What does “innovation” mean in the context of heritage production, preservation, and management?
  • Is heritage capable of generating all kinds of innovation – social, political, economic etc.?
  • What types of innovation does the area of cultural heritage need?
  • Does the future of heritage depend on innovative and creative re-use of its resources?

Creative (re)-use of the past – our brief philosophy

The idea that heritage and innovation are essentially antithetical has long shaped our thinking about the past and its uses. However, over the last decade or so, heritage and innovation – namely the past and the future, the old and the new, the physical and the digital, tradition and change – have gradually ceased to be considered adversaries and, instead, have been recognised as powerful allies that are capable of jointly contributing to social and political change, as well as economic development in Europe and beyond. It has become evident that innovative and creative uses of the past can play a vital role in building a better future.

Learn, grow, and develop long-lasting professional relationships and friendships!

ILUCIDARE Summer School offers diverse learning opportunities organised around three main building blocks:

  • Expert Sessions – you will get a chance to participate in lively and informative session formats (such as  panel discussions, round tables, interviews, etc.) where world renowned experts will discuss issues related to heritage and innovation. You will be invited to interact with those experts by asking questions, actively participating in discussions, and exchanging ideas. You will also be encouraged to develop professional and social contacts.
  • Innovation Workshops – you will participate in the innovation creation process with the application of the Design Thinking methodology. More importantly, you will be working – together with other participants – to find a creative answer to real-life challenges presented to you by the management of the Glass Heritage Center in Krosno. The Center is a well-recognized and innovative approach to industrial heritage. You will be asked to develop solutions to the challenges that they’ve been facing. In this process, you will be guided by innovation experts and Design Thinking moderators.
  • Networking - the social programme of the school will provide you with many opportunities to socialise and explore the city of Krakow and the region of south-east Poland. It will comprise field trips, study visits, and excursions which will help you get to know other participants well and build long-lasting relationships that will support your future work and further career development.
