Europa Nostra announced the 7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites in Europe 2024

The selection was made by the Europa Nostra Board, which Agata Wąsowska-Pawlik, the director of the International Cultural Centre is a member of. The initiative aims at supporting social engagement to saving endangered monuments.

 

The programme is realised in partnership with European Investment Bank Institute, which has the technical appraisal and rescue planning skills. On the nomination list there appeared, among others, the Palace in Sztynort. The following sites were selected as the most endangered:

 

Working-class Housing (courées) in Roubaix-Tourcoing (France) − new urban renovation plan poses favouring demolition poses a significant threat

Cycladic Islands, notably Sifnos, Serifos and Folegandros (Greece) − at risk of losing their authentic character due to tourist-oriented construction

Church of San Pietro in Gessate, Milan (Italy) − lack of resources for renovation works

Synagogue of Siena (Italy) − lack of resources for renovation

Home of the Yugoslav People’s Army in Šabac (Serbia) − city authourities is not willing to restore the building

Greek Orthodox Church of St. Georgios, Altınözü / Hatay province (Turkey) − the risk of collapsing, corrective measures needed

Iron Gate of Antioch, Antakya / Hatay province (Turkey) − urgent conservatory action needed

 

Since the launch of the programme, 63 threatened monuments and herigate sites from 31 countries across Europe have been selected.
