A place for a sculpture
July 10, 2015 (Friday)
11.00 a.m.

The second half of the 20th century did bring some considerable changes in the way one understood art. The borders between individual genres became more blurred, while some previously unknown forms of artistic expression (such as conceptual art or mail art) emerged. What is more, works of art stepped out of gallery walls or exhibition rooms and daringly entered the space occupied by everyday life. A lecture entitled “A place for sculpture” will familiarise the audience with the processes of radical changes in the field of art. Special attention will be paid to such phenomena as land art, or conceptual art.

Globally or locally?
August 14, 2015 (Friday)
11.00 a.m.

The “site specific” category applies to works of art which are vitally linked with the context in which they emerge. Such pieces take into account not only their specific location, immediate surroundings or natural materials available in the vicinity, but also an intricate net of social relations, political factors and intangible cultural heritage – all invisible to one’s eye. It seems that such an approach should be taken for granted in architectural projects; however, present-day architecture often ostentatiously ignores the context in which a given edifice is being erected. The lecture will introduce several architectural projects which illustrate the two, radically different models of thinking about a place.
