Join us for a walk: Modern Kraków wasn’t built overnight

April 25, 2026, 11.00

We invite you to join us on a walk dedicated to the development of modern Kraków—we’ll take a look at what has changed in the city and what has remained unchanged over the years. We’ll also try to answer the question of how the evolution of urban space reflected the needs of Kraków’s residents at the time.

During the walk, we’ll travel back to interwar Kraków, when the city began to develop rapidly after regaining independence. We’ll examine how its urban landscape and residents’ living conditions changed over the course of a dozen or so years, and what these transformations revealed about the ambitions of the young nation.

We will discuss the directions of urban and architectural development: what was built and for what purpose, and what social needs drove the new projects. We will learn about the most important architects of this period and highlight the distinctive features of their designs. We will see how the built environment has changed and which elements of Kraków’s past have remained unchanged. We will examine how the city of the early 20th century gradually became a modern center and how these transformations are still evident in its landscape today.
