During the trip, the ICC team met with representatives of museums and exhibition venues in the Tricity. Our staff visited the National Museum in Gdańsk – Department of Historical Art, the Emigration Museum in Gdynia, the St John’s Centre/the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre, the National Heritage Institute – Gdańsk Branch, and the City Culture Institute. The study visits provided an opportunity to discuss accessibility in cultural institutions, infrastructure and events designed with the specific needs of the public in mind, as well as historical research and publishing activities. Discussions also centred on the coordination of the educational programme and communication with audiences. The National Heritage Institute in Gdańsk also prepared a presentation for the ICC on accessibility in historic buildings, which was of particular interest to us given the modernisation work currently underway at our headquarters on Kraków’s Main Square as part of the FEnIKS programme.
The trip to the Tricity was part of the activities carried out by the ICC under the FEnIKS programme, which aims to rebuild and modernise the institution’s headquarters. Study visits enable our team to familiarise themselves with best practices developed by Polish and European cultural institutions and to apply them when devising new solutions for the ICC’s modernised headquarters.
The FEnIKS project aims not only to modernise the infrastructure, but also to enhance staff skills and develop a programme that meets the contemporary needs of the audience. The experience gained during the visit to Gdańsk and Gdynia will be utilised in further work on creating a modern, accessible and open space at the International Cultural Centre.
