Join us for a lecture as part of the “Decades with Art” series, during which we will examine how historic Kraków has changed in photographs. We will consider what photographers chose to capture and what they decided to leave out of the frame, and why. We will also discuss the significance of their work and how it has shaped the city’s collective memory.
31 August 2026, 12.00
From the photographs of Ignacy Krieger and Walery Rzewuski, through the post-war images of Henryk Hermanowicz, to Henryk Makarewicz’s documentation of the newly emerging Nowa Huta – successive generations of photographers not only recorded the changing face of the city, but also created images that, over time, became part of the collective memory.
This lecture, which echoes the exhibition at the ICC Gallery entitled “Save from Oblivion” (29 November 2007 – 3 March 2008), will provide an opportunity to view historical photographs of Kraków. We will treat them as an expression of the city’s memory – suspended between documentation and nostalgia. Photographs of old streets, buildings and residents allow us to trace not only what has disappeared from Kraków, but also the way in which successive eras chose what was worth preserving and what should be left out of the frame.
