Join us as we visit the workshops of Kraków’s craftspeople – both contemporary and those from years gone by! Together, we’ll embark on a journey through time – we’ll learn about the history of craft guilds, see how they helped the city develop, and discover what remains unchanged in watchmakers’, tailors’, bookbinders’ and confectioners’ workshops to this day.
This event will give you a glimpse into a world where every item was made to individual order, and craftsmanship ensured precision and durability. During the walk, we will tell you about the craft workshops which, despite the city’s rapid development, are still operating in Kraków today – often having been in continuous operation for several generations. We’ll discover the stories behind watchmakers’, shoemakers’, tailors’, bookbinders’, frame-makers’, hat-makers’ and confectioners’ workshops, and we’ll visit a few of them to see at first hand the places where these traditional crafts are still very much alive.
A walk in the footsteps of Kraków’s craftsmanship is a tale of the masters who, over the years, have shaped the character and significance of Kraków. It is the history of the craft guilds which, since the city’s foundation in 1257, have ensured not only the highest quality of their products, but also upheld a strong work ethic and passed on the secrets of their trade to successive generations. The route presents the city as a space where the workshops of tailors, shoemakers, carpenters, blacksmiths, potters and many other craftsmen formed the foundation of urban life and the basis for economic development.
