In July 1850, a large part of what was then Kraków went up in flames. The fire destroyed hundreds of buildings and forever changed the city’s appearance. Paradoxically, it also marked the beginning of the transformations that shaped modern Kraków.
During the walk, we will explore sites associated with this disaster and examine how it influenced Kraków’s architecture and development. We’ll learn about the causes and course of the fire, old firefighting methods, and architectural solutions designed to prevent the spread of fire—from shingle roofs to firewalls.
