Agata Wąsowska-Pawlik, Director of the International Cultural Centre, and Professor Jacek Purchla also took part in the event. Professor Kiss was a long-standing friend of our institution and a member of the ICC Programme Council.
The gathering at the Hungarian Consulate provided an opportunity to commemorate Professor Csaba G. Kiss. Friends and colleagues of the Professor, who rendered outstanding service to Polish and Hungarian culture, shared their memories of him. A screening of a film dedicated to him, entitled “Lengyel piac”, also took place, and the evening was attended by its director, Ferenc Zajti, as well as numerous guests from Hungary. A key highlight of the event was the opening of the Csaba G. Kiss Hungarian Library in Kraków, which is intended to serve Hungarians living in Małopolska and Poles who speak Hungarian.
Csaba G. Kiss was a professor at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and, until 2010, also a lecturer in the Department of Polish Culture at the Faculty of Polish Studies and in the Department of Hungarian Studies at the University of Warsaw. He also taught and conducted research at universities in Berlin, France, Nitra, Prague and Zagreb. He has collaborated with the International Cultural Centre in Krakow almost since the very beginning of our institution’s existence. His selection of essays and sketches, entitled “A Lesson in Central Europe”, opened our “The Central European Library series ”. Between 2014 and 2022, he was a member of the ICC’s Programme Council.
In his foreword to Prof. Kiss’s book, published by the ICC in 2009, Prof. Jacek Purchla wrote: “Csaba Kiss is one of our most loyal friends, and at the same time a true missionary of the idea of Central Europe (…). A Hungarian who has put so much effort not only into studying the identity of his own nation, but perhaps above all into understanding the soul of his Slavic neighbours”.
