The ICC is the patron of the 17th edition of the Diplomatic Festival

On 18–19 May 2026, the Faculty of International and Political Studies at the Jagiellonian University will host an international conference dedicated, among other things, to the concepts of power and authority in the context of diplomacy. The International Cultural Centre in Krakow is the patron of the event.

The Association of Students of International Relations of the Jagiellonian University and the International Cultural Centre in Kraków invite you to an international conference to be held under the theme “Diplomacy in the World of Power”. The theme will be examined in the context of the current global situation and the dynamic changes in the international order. Participants will explore the strategies adopted by states under such conditions. Using the metaphor of a magnet and a hammer, the conference organisers will contrast ‘hard power’ – the use of military force or sanctions – with ‘soft power’ – understood as values, culture or the power of persuasion – and will analyse their influence and significance in today’s world.

“Diplomacy in the world of power” – key themes and questions

During the 17th edition of the Diplomatic Festival, the discussion will focus on questions such as how the concept of power is defined in diplomacy and what its different forms are, as well as how ‘hard power’ is used in contemporary international politics and whether it remains a significant instrument of diplomacy. Conference participants will also discuss the current effectiveness of ‘soft power’ in shaping international relations, as well as the challenges and limitations of these two strategies in international relations.

The conference will cover the history and theory of international relations, as well as military and non-military approaches to international politics and conflict resolution. Participants will also discuss various types of ‘soft power’ and their practical applications. They will refer to contemporary armed conflicts and disputes, as well as to the topic of international, regional and national security.

Participants from around the world

The conference will be attended by experts from around the world – representing academia, but also those actively engaged in international relations. Presentations will also be given by students, who will examine the topic of power from various perspectives. The event will also provide an opportunity for the exchange of experiences and networking.

The conference will be held in Polish and English. The conference will be held in Polish and English and will be streamed live on the KSSM UJ Facebook page.
