The exhibition focused on the oeuvre of Slovenia’s finest architect who shaped the unique identity and architectural shape of Ljubljana.
For many years, his works remained in the shadow of the masters of “international style”, i.e. Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius. Discovered as a result of the post-modern shift, which came into prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, Plečnik was a revelation to a number of individuals. The exhibition familiarised the Krakow public with his most accomplished realisations carried out in Vienna, Prague and Ljubljana.
Plečnik’s oeuvre sparkles with variety: there is Secession decorativeness and modernist simplicity, Mediterranean classicism, vernacular roots, Central European expressionism. Fascination with tradition and fluency of modernist expression are the secrets of his success as an architect and the key to understanding the phenomenon of Plečnik’s Ljubljana. [Jacek Purchla]
