3rd Heritage Forum of Central Europe: The city

The central theme of the 3rd edition of the Heritage Forum of Central Europe was the city. The analysis of the city brought together researchers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, including urban planners, economists, sociologists, social psychologists, anthropologists, historians and art historians.

The conference opened with introductory lectures: Prof. Jacek Purchla’s lecture entitled “Central European City and Its Identity” and Prof. Christer Gustafsson’s (Uppsala University) lecture “Conservation 3.0 – Integrated Conservation in the Age of Smart Specialisation Strategies”.

As part of the call for papers announced in 2014, more than 60 presentations were selected (the meeting of the selection committee took place on 9–10 April 2015 in Prague). The conference featured 80 speakers from 18 countries, with more than 160 participants in total.

The papers were organised into the following parallel sessions:

Cities and Their Narratives

Heritage in Conflict

Who Is the City for?

Historic Urban Landscape

Creative Heritage Cities

Cityspace

Revitalisation Practices in Heritage Cities

OPENING LECTURES: “The Central European City and Its Identity” – Jacek Purchla (International Cultural Centre, Poland) and “Conservation 3.0 – Integrated Conservation in the Age of Smart Specialisation Strategies” – Christer Gustafsson (Uppsala University, Sweden).

The Forum concluded with plenary sessions. The conference discussions were introduced by the session “Central European City – Transformation and Globalisation”, featuring Karel Bartak (Czechia), Dr Melinda Benkő (Hungary), Dr Rafał Dutkiewicz and Dr Slávo Krekovič (Slovakia), and moderated by Prof. Jacek Purchla.

The session “Cultural Heritage Counts for Cities” provided an opportunity to present the results of the project “Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe”. In the first part, Dr Katarzyna Jagodzińska and Joanna Sanetra-Szeliga presented the report, while the second part featured a discussion with experts — Kate Pugh of The Heritage Alliance (United Kingdom) and Edwin Bendyk of the weekly *Polityka* — moderated by Prof. Jacek Purchla.

The Heritage Forum of Central Europe was organised by the International Cultural Centre.

The conference discussions concluded with the session “Heritage Cities and Cooperation in the V4 Region”, which brought together representatives of the Visegrad countries: Barbara Fogarasi (Hungary), Zuzana Jandlová (Czechia), Kristína Markušová (Slovakia) and Prof. Jacek Purchla.

The Forum concluded with a session open to the wider public, entitled “Cities: Re-fashioning Needed! On Revitalisation in Cities”, featuring Marek Adamov (Slovakia), Dr Tamás Fejérdy (Hungary), Jarosław Ogrodowski and Petr Šimon (Czechia), and moderated by Agata Wąsowska-Pawlik.
