Frequently perceived as the heart of Poland and the most Polish of all Polish cities, Krackw is also the most cosmopolitan place in Poland. For over a thousand years a variety of different influences have met and intermingled in the city at the foot of Wawel Hill, and artists of many languages and nationalities have come to Krakow in search of opportunities to accomplish their artistic visions. The richly illustrated book is an attempt at interpreting European themes in Krakow's heritage over the centuries. It is also meant as an attempt to answer the question of the status of Krakow in the history of European civilisation.
