This publication is the outcome of a conference under the same title, organised by the ICC, which gave a particular attention to the cultural phenomenon of Central Europe. The turn of the century is an espacially intriguing period. It was precisely around 1900, when our part of Europe - bedet with increasing contradictions, conflicts and threats - reached a uniquely high level of creativity, leading to an unprecedented great intellectual and artistic contribution to he cultural heritage of our continent.
