Książka jest owocem międzynarodowej konferencji pt. „Dziedzictwo kulturowe u progu XXI wieku. Szanse i wyzwania” zorganizowanej przez Międzynarodowe Centrum Kultury w Krakowie we współpracy z ICOMOS International w dniach 24–28 maja 2006 roku z okazji jubileuszu piętnastolecia Centrum. W skład publikacji weszły teksty dwadzieściorga dziewięciorga autorek i autorów z całego świata, poświęcone dziedzictwu kulturowemu, tożsamości, refleksjom nad dorobkiem cywilizacji europejskiej, dialogowi kultur i społeczeństw, ochronie zabytków oraz zarządzaniu dziedzictwem.
