Publikacja stanowi plon międzynarodowej konferencji zorganizowanej w 1994 roku przez MCK, który uwagę koncentruje na fenomenie kulturowym Europy Środkowej czasu przełomu wieków. To właśnie około roku 1900 targana narastającymi sprzecznościami, konfliktami i zagrożeniami nasza część Europy wybiła się na wyjątkowo wysoki poziom kreatywności, wnosząc także ogromny ładunek intelektualny do dziedzictwa kulturowego całego kontynentu.
