This publication is the outcome of the conference organised in late November and early December 1995. The aim of the conference was to compare the opinions of specialists in the hisotry of art, architecture, town planning and cultural heritage preservation on the role of art and architecture, and town planning in particular, in local government policy and the consciusness of city residence. The conferenc e was also designed to review internationally used methods of research and preservation with regard to urban architecture and town plannes, to present the municipal architecture of Poland and Central Europe, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. The publication provides an important scholarly aid for local and regional governments, conservators, experts in museums studies, and staff at institutions involved in cultural heritage preservation.
