René Magritte is one of the best know surrealist artists. Though widely recognised and celebrated as a world-class painter, Magritte was also a photographer; though for very many years his photographs remained relatively unknown. The catalogue contains the photographs taken between 1928 and 1955 – made public only after the death of the painter and previously unseen in Poland. The photographs show how the element of artistic creation is combined with the private, intimate world of the artist and his loved ones. Taken during his trips and informal meetings, the photographs brim with the Dadaist humour, the atmosphere of burlesque and the specific aura characteristic for Magritte’s canvases, as well as motifs typical for the artist’s output.
The illustrations have been fleshed out with two essays devoted to both the artist himself and the art of Surrealism by eminent experts in the field, Mr Xavier Cannone and Mr Marcel von Jole (a friend of René Magritte).
