We invite you to read the 56th issue of “Herito” magazine, which is dedicated to post-mining heritage. In its pages we look at the material, architectural and cultural traces of mining history and consider how to tame post-mining heritage, often called “troublesome.”

As Barry Gamble writes in the latest issue of “Herito”, Central Europe is unique in terms of its mining heritage. That's why, together with our authors, we take a look at post-industrial complexes from Turow to Boryslav and reflect on their past and future. Mining has played a huge role in social development, so it is important to appreciate it and consider how to preserve its legacy and identity.

In this issue of “Herito: Post-Mining,” we focus on examples of outstanding preservation efforts in saving post-mining heritage. We analyze the ways in which post-industrial spaces of such unique character, such as adits, shafts and heaps, have been used and look for narratives for them. We also cite examples of artistic commentary on post-mining landscapes and contexts, paying attention to photography, history or literature. We also explore approaches to the legacy of mining in different areas, such as Lower and Upper Silesia.

This issue also marks the symbolic passing of the baton to the new editor-in-chief, Bartosz Sadulski, which he takes over from Professor Jacek Purchla, who has held the position for 15 years. Professor Purchla will remain a regular contributor to “Herito”.
