Professor Andrzej Chwalba, member of the ICC Programme Council, has been awarded the Wacław Jędrzejewicz History Award by the Józef Piłsudski Institute in New York. The professor was recognised for his academic work and popularisation of history, as well as his ability to recount it in a lively and inspiring way.

During a gala ceremony held on 23 October in New York, the board of the Józef Piłsudski Institute in America honoured Prof. Andrzej Chwalba's contribution to research on 20th-century Polish history, in particular his significant academic work on the First and Second World Wars. The Wacław Jędrzejewicz Award is granted for achievements in the field of history. Its patron was one of the founders of the Józef Piłsudski Institute, a trusted confidant of the Marshal, a military man, a minister of the Second Republic of Poland, a politician, a historian and a lecturer. He made numerous contributions to the fight for Poland's independence and to shaping the patriotic and historical awareness of the younger generation abroad. We congratulate Prof. Chwalba on this important award.

Prof. Chwalba has been associated with the ICC for many years and supports us with his knowledge and experience. An outstanding historian, essayist and lecturer at the Jagiellonian University, he is the vice-president of the Polish Historical Society and the Foundation for Blind and Visually Impaired Children. He also sits on the scientific and programme councils of many cultural institutions, including the Scientific Council of The Polish History Museum, the Scientific Council of the Nowa Huta Museum, and the Programme Council of the ICC. He specialises in 19th-century history, Polish-Russian relations and the history of Krakow and Poland in recent times. His numerous publications include both academic and popular works. He has won many awards, including the Polityka History Award, the Identitas Literature and History Award and the Janusz Kurtyka Award.

On 24 October at 18.00, Prof. Andrzej Chwalba will take part in a meeting with the winners of the 2025 Awards Gala at the Piłsudski Institute and will give a lecture entitled “May 1926: Coup or demonstration?”.
