We invite you to the next Open Lecture of the Heritage Academy dedicated to the principles of proper conservation of historic stained glass. The most important assumptions of the conservation procedure will be presented by Sławomir Oleszczyk, an outstanding specialist in the conservation and reconstruction of medieval, modern and nineteenth-century stained glass.

In 1958, Poland joined the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (CVMA), an organization formed six years earlier on the initiative of prof. Hans R. Hahnloser during the International Congress of Art History in Amsterdam, under the aegis of the International Academic Union (UAI) and the International Committee on the History of Art (CIHA). The original goal of CVMA was comprehensive research on medieval stained glass. With time, they also included modern stained glass (which was reflected in the name of the organization - now Corpus Vitrearum).

The seat of Corpus Vitrearum Polska is the Institute of Art History of the Jagiellonian University at ul. Grodzka in Krakow, which houses a specialized archive, library and photo library, covering collections related to Polish and foreign stained glass - from the Middle Ages to modern times.

In 2004, during the 22nd International Colloquim Corpus Vitrearum in Nuremberg, the main ideas and standards for conservation work were set up when working on historic stained glass windows, which Sławomir Oleszczyk will talk about during the lecture. The topics discussed will include methods of preventive and intervention conservation, methods of conservation of frames and other architectural elements related to stained glass, and the most common errors and irregularities in conservation proceedings will be presented.

Sławomir Oleszczuk - art conservator, graduate of conservation and restoration of architectural elements and details at the Institute of Historical and Conservation Studies at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (1988). Member of the Association of Stained Glass Lovers "Ars Vitrea Polona" and Corpus Vitrearum Polska. He preserved and reconstructed, among others valuable medieval, modern and nineteenth-century stained glass windows exhibited in the Museum of Architecture, the Archdiocese Museum in Wrocław and Katowice, the National Museum in Krakow, Poznań and Gdańsk, the Castle Museum in Malbork and the Museum in Frombork. Together with his associates, he performed stained glass conservation in dozens of sacred buildings throughout Poland.
