The lecture addressed the painting depicting the Adoration of the Magi from the church in Dryświaty (presently in Belarus) and panel painting in Poland and Lithuania around 1520.

Giedrė Mickūnaitė, lecturer and researcher at the Academy of Art in Vilnius, describes her first impression of the painting in the following way: “How come I had never seen this painting? - I asked myself in amazement when I saw this picture for the first time in Minsk. Simultaneously with the admiration for the painting, I felt that Mary’s face looked familiar, which pushed me to examine the painting further and present it against a broader background of Lithuanian and Polish early Renaissance painting. Faces and places became a framework for the research into the context in which this painting came to be.

During the lecture, I will present the history of the painting, discuss the sources, and present hypotheses about the provenance and position of this work in art history. The aim of the meeting will be to discuss this little-known work and compare the opinions of experts specialising in the panel painting from the reign of Sigismund I the Old”.

Professor Giedrė Mickūnaitė is a lecturer and researcher associated with the Academy of Art in Vilnius. She is interested in memory and heritage studies and explores the problem of oblivion and lack as creative tools. Her new book, "Maniera Greca in Europe's Catholic East (Amsterdam UP, 2021)", devoted to the meaning of the “Greek style” in Lithuanian and Polish art from the end of the 14th century to the beginning of the 18th century, will be released this year. She is interested in art created in the circle of the Jagiellonian court. She is a fellow of the Thesaurus Poloniae program of the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport.

The broadcast of the event was available on Tuesday, March 23 at 16.00 on the ICC profile on Facebook.

The lecture will be delivered in English.
