Pomiejsce – architecture of disappearance. Meeting with Michał Krasucki at the BAZARCH Fair

We invite you to a meeting with the author of the book „Warszawskie getto. Pomiejsce”, which will take place as part of the BAZARCH Book Fair. Agnieszka Rasmus-Zgorzelska from the Architecture Center Foundation will talk to Michał Krasucki about the traces of the past inscribed in the space of the contemporary city and about what the titular pomiejsce is.

Michał Krasucki navigates the titular non-place with exceptional attentiveness and sensitivity to human fate. In his view, contemporary and bygone Warsaw is a territory that still demands discovery and reflection on how to commemorate its difficult history. The author argues that the smallest element of the urban landscape can be a carrier of memory, but also a non-place or rather a post-place – for contemporary people, a strange, incomprehensible element of urban space, at least until it is told. Michał Krasucki will talk to Agnieszka Rasmus-Zgorzelska about the significance of such areas of the city, their disappearance and commemoration, reading history from traces on walls, cobblestones and maps, and incorporating them into contemporary architecture during an event accompanying the BAZARCH Book Fair.

The starting point for the book „Warszawskie getto. Pomiejsce” is space – something enigmatic, blurred by time, often considered insignificant in the context of major events. The author of the publication, released by the International Cultural Center, searches for individual events, fates, and stories, and incorporates them into the history of a unique area on the map of Warsaw. He describes 28 places in the Warsaw Ghetto, and the source of the stories about them are his wanderings around the city on the anniversary of the 1943 uprising. For 28 days, Krasucki visited one place a day, reconstructing the events that took place both in the ghetto and on the Aryan side.

BAZARCH 2025 takes place on October 18 and 19 (11.00 to 19.00). It is a two-day book festival, during which you can find an up-to-date overview of the latest publications on architecture, art, space, the city, the countryside, activism, spatial planning, ecology, construction, landscape, heritage, monuments, and art in public space, all in one place. It is organized by the Architecture Center Foundation. It is accompanied by a series of meetings and special events.

Michał Krasucki – art historian and Warsaw expert, graduate of the University of Warsaw. Professionally, he deals with the protection of monuments and heritage management at the national and international level. For ten years, he has been working in local government, responsible for Warsaw's heritage protection policy, first as a deputy and, since 2016, as the Capital City Conservator of Monuments. He chairs the municipal Team for the Erection of Monuments and Commemorations and the Team for Warsaw's Historic Art Studios. He is also a member of the Warsaw Team for Intangible Cultural Heritage. As the Mayor of Warsaw's representative for UNESCO, his tasks include coordinating the work of the Central and Eastern European Secretariat for the International Organization of World Heritage UNESCO Cities (OWHC).

Agnieszka Rasmus-Zgorzelska – a graduate of English studies, where she became interested in, among other things, the theory of translation as intercultural communication, and postgraduate studies in urban planning. Co-founder and head of the Architecture Center Foundation, curator, publisher, editor, journalist, and translator. She runs publishing projects, curates artistic and educational events related to the popularization of knowledge about architecture, and builds bridges between art disciplines and between the worlds of specialists and amateurs.
