Meeting: Why Do We Know so Little about the Czechs?

May 9, 2014, 7.00 p.m.
Why Do We Know so Little about the Czechs? On Art and Other Things
Bar Studio at the Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw

Agnieszka Obszańska (a moderator) in talk with Maria Poprzęcka, Irena Kossowska, Monika Rydiger, Natalia Żak and Michał Burdziński

Mucha, Kupka and… Well, exactly, what other Czech artist from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries can we name? Indisputably, we find French, Belgian or German takes on charming, yet terrifying symbolism thoroughly fascinating. Although Czech symbolism is, both technically and thematically, their equal, we know next to nothing about it. This being despite the fact that Olomouc, Ostrava, Brno and Prague are so close. The debate will gather experts on culture and art and will offer an attempt to address the following questions: Why do we prefer Western-European mainstream to the cultural production coming from our part of Europe? Why do we know so little about our neighbours? Why are we interested in Czech cinema and literature and, simultaneously, we know next to nothing about Czech art?
