Lecture: “Geometry of the detail. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Vienna Workshops”

The lecture will refer to the exhibition “Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Life and work”, addressing the work of Mackintosh and that of selected artists working at Vienna Workshops. The lecturer will discuss the links between Mackintosh and the Viennese design community.

The works of the Scottish architect and designer and the activities of the Wiener Werkstätte [Vienna Workshops] were an expression of new ways of thinking about detail and ornamentation, as well as about the relationship between form and structure. At the same time, Victor Horta designed houses full of multi-coloured stained-glass windows, finely winding staircases and floral ornaments for the Brussels elite, and Hector Guimard created his famous sculptural entrances to Paris metro stations.

Lecturer:

Dr. Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk – art historian, curator. She studied art history at the Jagiellonian University, Universität Wien, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. A graduate of the interdisciplinary programme Environment-Technology-Society (Jagiellonian University). Author of academic articles on art and architecture of the 20th century and essays in exhibition catalogues and magazines. Co-editor of the anthology “obraz/ciało” and co-editor of “Komponowanie przestrzeni. Rzeźby awangardy”. Co-author and curator of the Exercising Modernity programme (Pilecki-Institut Berlin). As part of her doctoral dissertation prepared at the Institute of Art History of the Jagiellonian University, she investigates the concept of space in the work of Katarzyna Kobro.
