International Culture Centre in Krakow invites you to Zbigniew Bajek’s exhibition “On the Edge” (2022-2023) which will be presented from September 30th to October 27th in the medieval cellars. This is the newest work cycle of this renowned artist, in which he exquisitely merges Franz Kafka’s works with the landscape of military cemeteries designed by Dušan Jurkovič. Inspiration for this creation was Russian armed aggression on Ukraine in February of 2022 – it made Bajek reflect on human existence and remembrance of the past.

In his works, Zbigniew Bajek crosses the boundaries of time, juxtapositioning the past, present, and future, creating a universal meeting and dialogue between those dimensions. Entering the sacrum zone, the artist creates new, metaphysical symbols and emphasizes the importance of light – sometimes fading away, other times igniting – as a symbol of the constant fight between life and death. His artworks are meant to be his opposition against the destruction and chaos of war, confronting the raw existentialism of the early 20th century with contemporary reality.

“On the Edge” is an exhibition that opens the reflection upon life and death and about how history and art are intertwined in the constant search for the truth of human existence. Accompanying the exhibition is the video projection with a climatic soundtrack of Jacek Niepołomski, and embroidered fabrics of “Cuts and Scrapes” from 2015 that heighten the feeling of unease and solitude.
