On June 4–5, a meeting of the European Sites of Holocaust Memory (ESHEM) Working Group took place at the International Cultural Centre in Krakow. This is a new initiative of the European Commission, and its task is to educate about the Holocaust, fight hatred and support Jewish culture.

The ICC hosted a meeting of the ESHEM working group, a flagship project of the European Commission, embedded in its strategy to combat various manifestations of antisemitism. Its task is to deepen cooperation between memorials in Europe, organizations dealing with the Holocaust, and support for Jewish culture and life in the area between 2021 and 2030.

The meeting was attended by people from various European countries who specialize in the field of heritage and the protection of memorials and in research on them, as well as those involved in public policy in the cultural sphere. They shared experiences and good practices in the field of Holocaust memorialization and education, discussed contemporary threats and ways to develop education and communication within the subject.

In January, the ESHEM Secretariat was established to coordinate a network of cooperation between those involved in commemorating and preserving Jewish heritage and memory, while promoting democratic values and human rights. Responsible for the initiative on behalf of the European Commission are the Warsaw-based Forgotten Foundation, FestivALT, Urban Memory Foundation, and the GOPA PACE and GOPAcom consulting and communications firm, among others.
