ICC Publishing House now offers the e-book version of “Carpathia” by Prof. Maciej Janowski. We invite you to explore this title in a more “portable”, travel-friendly format.

Prof. Maciej Janowski’s book describes the history of the Carpathians from prehistory to the present day. For the author, they are a space where people and landscape form a community of shared destiny, and history unfolds to the rhythm of valleys and mountain passes. Prof. Janowski presents the Carpathians as a multinational region where various ethnic and religious groups have coexisted for centuries. In his book, he paints a landscape straddling cultures and empires, in which “mountainousness” becomes a cultural category — a way of life and thinking shaped by nature, beliefs and art.

The author also examines the period of post-war transformations: displacements, industrialisation, changes to the landscape and memory. In this section, one sees the clash of imperial legacies with the reality of socialist states, and subsequently with the transformation process after 1989. Without exaggeration, but with literary attentiveness and historical erudition, he sketches a panorama of the Carpathians, which have no single centre.
