Doormat (a)new – happening

Your doormat will become part of a latest art project by a world famous artist and will be displayed at the International Cultural Centre Gallery within the framework of the exhibition “Memory. Registers and territory”.

Mirosław Bałka, a world famous artist, is currently working on a new piece to be displayed at the exhibition “Memory. Registers and territory” which will open in December 2013 at the ICC Gallery. Balka’s work will cover an area of 32 square metres and will address the issues of memory, leaving one’s trace behind, drawing borderlines and… wiping one’s shoes. This ordinary object which one comes into contact with on an everyday basis sets up not only physical, but also symbolic borders of one’s private territory. Worn out marks and signs of wear and tear are also a kind of record, a “diary” of comings and goings, registered signs of presence.

So as to create his piece, the artist requires 250 doormats. We want to collect old doormats and offer new ones instead. The doormat exchange point is open at the ICC Gallery (every day, except Monday, from 10.30 a.m. till 5.30 p.m.; at other times upon previous appointment). We will also collect doormats during a happening organised in the Podgórze district on October 19 and in Leroy Merlin (Kraków, Medweckiego St. 2) from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. on November 10.

"If you want to share your trace and join the others, come and exchange your doormat."
Mirosław Bałka

We collect plaited short-haired coconut fibre doormats. Unfortunately, we do not accept rubber, metal or carpet doormats.
