June 11, 2024 at At 6:00 p.m. there will be a meeting at the ICC devoted to the various ethnic groups living in Odesa and the waves of colonialization that have swept through the city over the centuries.

On the Black Sea coast of today's Ukraine, we can find traces of Thracian, Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman civilizations. Who and when were the Scythians and Sarmatians, where did the Goths come from on the Black Sea - and what connects them all with our times? Why Saint Cyril went to the Khazars and what resulted?

The city of Chersonesos is the mythical cradle of Christianity in Russia, and Tmutorokań is associated with a widely known monument of Russian literature, "The Word about Igor's Regiment". When telling the history of these areas, facts often smoothly turn into romantic over-interpretations, and the adjectives "Russian", "Little Russian", "Odessa", "Russian" and "Ukrainian" unexpectedly often talk about politics, colonialism and decolonization, rather than geography and identity. These thought patterns, their origins and effects will also be discussed during our meeting.

Guests: Dr. Anna Budziak, Dr. Oleksandr Hryhorjev, Dr. Agata Skrzewska

The meeting will be transmitted and translated into the Polish Sign Language.
