Join us for a lecture that will recall the exhibition “Zbigniew Dłubak. Against Stereotypes”. The event will introduce the work and the intellectual and artistic background of the Group 55.

As part of the next meeting of the “Decades with Art” series, Dr. Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk will talk about Group 55, which is one of the most important phenomena in Polish art of the second half of the 20th century. The artistic group, which was founded in 1955 in Warsaw, was formed by Zbigniew Dłubak, Marian Bogusz and Kajetan Sosnowski, among others. These artists attempted to redefine the artwork, crossing its boundaries. Their activities included, for example, meetings, grassroots exhibitions or ephemeral artistic actions in private spaces.

The exhibition, presented at the International Cultural Centre from June 24 to July 20, 1993, was accompanied by a publication under the same title: “Zbigniew Dłubak. Against Stereotypes”. At that time, the space of the ICC Gallery showed almost exclusively photographic works, which were created from the late 1950s to the present time of the exhibition. Their juxtaposition was intended to show the consistency of the artist's artistic program and its universal, timeless character. From the very beginning of his creative work, Zbigniew Dłubak eschewed ready-made meanings or ways of interpreting art and considered such a strategy to be the essence of the avant-garde. He tried to make artistic creation independent of its aesthetic and utilitarian functions.

The specifics of his art and the activities of Group 55 will be presented by Dr. Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk.

The meeting will be held on-line via the Zoom platform.

Participation in the lecture is free of charge.
