“Female Faces of the Avant-Garde in Poland: Katarzyna Kobro, Barbara Brukalska, Helena Syrkus”

We would like to invite you to a lecture that will remind you of the exhibition “Years of Disarray: Art of the Avant-garde in Central Europe 1908–1928”. Its protagonists will be three famous artists, co-founders of the avant-garde milieu in Poland.

Katarzyna Kobro, Barbara Brukalska, Helena Syrkus. The first of them was a sculptor, the author of the concept of sculpture as a spatial composition – a unique idea developed by the artist also in the field of architecture. The other two were architects who considered art as an important area for thinking about architecture. Among other things, Kobro, Brukalska and Syrkus had in common the dream of a less chaotic, orderly world. It should be formed by a language that was universal and rooted in mathematics and geometry, as well as by architecture and sculpture - tools for shaping the new man.

Dr. Malgorzata Jędrzejczyk will talk about the creative explorations of the three artists and their interrelationships.

The meeting will be held online via the Zoom platform.

Dr. Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk – art historian, curator. Studied art history at Jagiellonian University, Universität Wien and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Graduate of the interdisciplinary study program Environment-Technology-Society (UJ). Author of scholarly articles on 20th century art and architecture and publications in exhibition catalogs and journals. Co-editor of an anthology of image/body texts and publication Composing Space. Sculptures of the avant-garde. Co-author and curator of the artistic and scientific program Exercising Modernity (Pilecki-Institut Berlin). As part of her doctoral thesis being prepared at the Institute of Art History at the Jagiellonian University, she is conducting research on the concept of space in the work of Katarzyna Kobro.

The lecture will be held in Polish.
