On Thursday, 16 January at 6 p.m., we invite you to Professor David Crowley's lecture "Architecture as Criticism in Central Europe 1970-1989".

During the meeting, David Crowley will talk about how representations of the architectural counterculture of the 1970s and 1980s expressed criticism of modernism and socialism in Central and Eastern European countries. One such vehicle was conceptual ‘paper architecture’, which had enormous ideological value.

What was the purpose, and more importantly, the effect of these activities? We invite you to a meeting.

Professor David Crowley is Director of the School of Visual Culture at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

He is the author of Socialism and Style. Material Culture in Post-war Eastern Europe (2000), Warsaw (2003), Socialist Spaces. Sites of Everyday Life in the Eastern Bloc (2003) and Pleasures in Socialism: Leisure and Luxury in the Eastern Bloc (2010). Curator of exhibitions including: Cold War Modern (with Jane Pavitt) at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2008-2009) and Notes from the Underground. Alternative Art and Music in Eastern Europe 1968-1994 (with Daniel Muzyczuk) at the Museum of Art in Łódź (2016-2017) and Akademie der Künste in Berlin (2018).
