On the 16th of November, at 7 pm in the International Cultural Centre a panel discussion took place as part of the 55th International AICA Congress. The panel was entitled “Unpacking the Archive: Connecting Pasts and Futures of Art Criticism in Central and Eastern Europe”.

The discussion was joined by Marysia Lewandowska (artist, co-editor of “Słów brak”, an anthology of texts by Ewa Mikina), Magda Ujma and Małgorzata Kaźmierczak (co-editors of “Bridging the Gaps. An Anthology of Art Criticism from Central and Eastern Europe after 1989”), Paweł Leszkowicz (critic and curator, contributor to “Bridging the Gaps…”), and Richard Gregor (founder of the web-archive artdispecing.sk, vice-president of AICA SK). It was moderated by Dorota Monkiewicz.

This year the Congress was entitled “Contested Infrastructures. Art Criticism and the Institutionalization of Art”. As Arkadiusz Półtorak – PhD, President of AICA Poland – announced, during the Congress nearly forty people from twenty different countries shared observations and predictions about the development of museums, galleries, and public archives. The participants discussed the extent to which contemporary artistic, critical and curatorial practices require institutional support, what institutions they need, and to what extent they can contribute to counteracting the global ecological and economic crises.

The International Association of Art Critics (AICA) was founded in 1950 under the auspices of UNESCO. Its purpose is to support art criticism. Polish Section of AICA brings together 133 people.
