Agata Wąsowska-Pawlik is one of 12 experts judging cities that apply to be the 2029 European Capital of Culture.

In the competition for the 2029 European Capital of Culture contesting are cities from Poland and Sweden. The joining declarations were submitted by Bielsko-Biała, Bydgoszcz, Jastrzębie-Zdrój, Katowice, Kielce, Kołobrzeg, Lublin, Opole, Płock, Pszczyna, Rzeszów, and Toruń.

This week the hearings of the candidate cities took place. The next meeting to conclude a short list of cities qualified for the final phase will happen in December.

In the assessing panel, two experts represent Poland: Agata Wąsowska-Pawlik and Łukasz Gaweł, Ph.D., professor of the Jagiellonian University and director of the National Museum in Warsaw.

Receiving the title of the “European Capital of Culture” means the obligation to prepare a rich program of artistic events. It should assume transnational cooperation, widening the access to culture and strengthening relations between culture and other sectors. The title of the ECC is an opportunity to promote the city internationally. In 2000, the European Capital of Culture was Krakow. In 2016, it was Wroclaw. This year, the ECC are Veszprém (Hungary), Timișoara (Romania), and Eleusis (Greece).
