The Historical Museum Frankfurt is renewing its buildings since 2008, 2017 will be the opening of the new facilities with almost 6.000 squaremetres of exhibition space. Despite its name, the museum has always been a city museum, only between 1972 and 2008 it moved towards a specialisation in general, German and regional history. The new concept focusses on the city as rapidly changing context of the majority of mankind, on the example of Frankfurt. In particular the polyphony of a culturally highly diverse city like Frankfurt with its more than 50 percent of inhabitants with migration background is a real challenge for an old cultural institution. The new museum concepts will try to mirror the diversity of the city with a great variety of exhibitions in different formats, with many possibilities to participate in the museum work.
