Erasmus+ project "Behind The Walls" - visit of students to the ICC

In 2021 the International Cultural Centre inaugurated the collaboration with the Jan III Sobieski Secondary School in Krakow as a partner institution for the Erasmus+ “Behind the Walls” programme.

This three-year-long project brings together students and teachers from Poland, Belgium, Finland, Austria, and Spain. The programme focuses on promoting knowledge about the cultural heritage of the partner countries, in particular on the issues of conservation of historic buildings, revitalization and problems with dissonant heritage. The project aims to develop the students’ awareness of the traditions and cultural heritage of their own country as well as other European countries.

In mid-March 2022, the first of a series of planned visits by international guests took place. Students and teachers from the Belgian town of Tielt, together with their peers from Poland, visited the ICC twice, where they attended a lecture on the socialist realist architecture of Nowa Huta, took part in the exhibition "Unwanted Capital. Architecture and Urban Planning in Krakow during the German Occupation of 1939–1945”, as well as in workshops on dissonant heritage. The lecture was conducted by Dr. Michał Wiśniewski, and the workshops by Marek Świdrak from the Education Centre - Academy of Heritage. The classes were preceded by visits to Nowa Huta and its now closed steel plant.
