Decades with art. "Entartete Kunst" - when art becomes politics

On July 19, 1937, the exhibition "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art). The exhibition was an effect of the fateful cultural policy of National Socialism, which divided art into those considered useful for political purposes and those that could prove inconsistent with the official message or dangerous for propaganda.

This gloomy chapter in the history of 20th-century exhibitions was recalled during the March lecture held as part of the "Decades with Art" series. During the lecture, selected works shown at the 1937 exhibition will be discussed, as well as profiles of their creators, such as Otto Dix, George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka or Käthe Kollwitz.

Lecturer:
Dr Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk - art historian, curator. She studied art history at the Jagiellonian University, Universität Wien and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. A graduate of the interdisciplinary study programme Environment-Technology-Society (Jagiellonian University). Author of academic papers on art and architecture of the 20th century, as well as essays in exhibition catalogues and magazines. Co-editor of the anthology of texts, obraz/ciało, and the publication „Komponowanie przestrzeni. Rzeźby awangardy”. Co-author and curator of the artistic and scientific programme Exercising Modernity (Pilecki-Institut Berlin). As part of her doctoral dissertation prepared at the Institute of Art History of the Jagiellonian University, she conducted research on the concept of space in the work of Katarzyna Kobro.
