Duch, který pracuje/ A spirit at Work. Architektura a česká politika 1918-1945 / Architecture and Czech Politics 1918-1945, Vendula Hnídková ed., Praha / Pregue 2000, pp. 1-608.

The ICC Library has acquired an interesting bilingual publication devoted to the issue of the correlation between Czech architecture and politics in the period of key importance for the formation of Czech statehood between 1918 and 1945, i.e. during the First Republic and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. A collection of texts by Dr. Vendula Hnídkova, an art historian associated with the University of Birningam, Dr. Jana Galeta (Masarykova univerzita / Masaryk Univeristy), Dr. Dita Dvořkovej (Czech University of Technology in Prague / České vysoké učení technické v Praze / The Czech Technical University in Prague) and Dr. Veronika Rollova (Vysoká škola uměleckoprrazmyslová v Prazmyslová of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague) analyzes the aforementioned relationships in many ways.

Much attention was devoted to the role of architecture in shaping the contemporary Czech nation and modernizing the country, while paying attention to the differences and dependencies between the center and the periphery. The authors of the book analyzed a wide spectrum of various types of public utility buildings and housing estates erected in that period. They also showed the efforts of the creators and their principals, such as the army or the government, related to the implementation of specific political visions and the pursuit of a kind of social harmony. The texts are complemented by black and white illustrative material, a valuable bibliography, including archives and indexes.

This publication accompanied the exhibition of the same title, presented from October 2020 to January 2021 at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (Uměleckoprůmyslové museum v Praze - Dům U Černé Matky Boží / The Museum from Decorative Arts in Prague - House At the Blac Madonna). It is worth mentioning that this prestigious institution, currently numbering over 250,000. exhibits was established in 1885 in Prague's Josefov, and it collects examples of local and foreign historical and contemporary crafts, as well as applied arts and industrial design.

Both the exhibition itself and the presented book were the aftermath of the research project "Architecture and Czech Politics in the 19th-21th Cenruries" implemented since 2018 by the Department of Art Theory and History of the Prague Academy of Art, Architecture and Design (the Department of Art Theory and Histor, Prague's Academy of Arts, Architecure and Design).
