A lecture from the “Decades with Art” series: Jan Vermeer and the secrets of his art

His play with light, compositions built from just a few colours and everyday life – Vermeer’s paintings captivate with their attention to detail and bring out the beauty in the most ordinary situations. Dr Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk will discuss the secrets hidden within this outstanding artist’s work and what new insights the latest research offers into his painting technique.

We invite you to a lecture as part of the “Decades with Art” series, which will be devoted to the work of Jan Vermeer – one of the most outstanding painters of the 17th century. The event will explore the phenomenon of this artist and outline his place in Dutch painting. We will discuss issues relating to the painter’s technique, the role of light and colour in his compositions, as well as contemporary research which continues to yield new discoveries regarding his painting technique and working methods.

Dr Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk’s lecture will revisit the exhibition “Jan Vermeer. Saint Praxedis” (May–September 1991) and will provide an opportunity to examine the artist’s work from the perspectives of both art history and the latest conservation and technological research.

Host:

Dr. Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk – art historian, curator. Studied art history at Jagiellonian University, Universität Wien and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Graduate of the interdisciplinary study program Environment-Technology-Society (UJ). Author of scholarly articles on 20th century art and architecture and publications in exhibition catalogs and journals. Co-editor of an anthology of “image/body texts” and publication “Composing Space. Sculptures of the avant-garde”. Co-author and curator of the artistic and scientific program “Exercising Modernity” (Pilecki-Institut Berlin). As part of her doctoral thesis being prepared at the Institute of Art History at the Jagiellonian University, she is conducting research on the concept of space in the work of Katarzyna Kobro.
