‘What after the mines?’. A meeting about Herito at the Silesian Theatre in Katowice

The first stop on our journey through Silesia is Katowice. On 8 September, at the Silesian Theatre, the editor-in-chief of Herito Bartosz Sadulski will talk to the director of the Silesian Museum Łukasz Galusek, the vice-president of Katowice Jarosław Makowski and the Municipal Conservator of Monuments in Tychy Anna Syska about how to assess and care for post-mining heritage, what problems it creates, but also what opportunities and possibilities it offers.

In an interview conducted by Anna Syska for Herito with the authors of the report Mining Heritage, Zbigniew Sąsiadek emphasised the urgent need for new ideas for the functions of revitalised post-industrial facilities, as many activities are carried out in a piecemeal manner. Without clearly formulated and rigorous guidelines for post-industrial heritage, it is at risk of destruction, and the solution will not be to create more industrial museums. A great deal of responsibility lies with local authorities, which in many cases are unable to treat mining areas as an asset and an opportunity for development.

Anna Syska, historian and architecture populariser. Author of the book Spodek w Zenicie. Przewodnik po architekturze lat 1945–1989 w województwie śląskim (Spodek at Zenith: A Guide to Architecture in the Silesian Province from 1945 to 1989). She studies the cultural heritage of the Silesian Province and western Małopolska, with a particular focus on 20th-century architecture. She works as the Municipal Conservator of Monuments in Tychy. She is a lover of mongrels and ceramics from the Steatyt factory. She runs a popular Instagram profile @to_tylko_architektura.

Dr Łukasz Galusek, director of the Silesian Museum in Katowice. An expert in the field of Central European culture and art, he focuses on the relationships between space, memory and identity. He is the author of over 150 scientific publications on the cultural heritage of Central Europe, as well as issues of memory and cultural education.

Jarosław Makowski, Deputy Mayor of Katowice. He founded and headed the Civic Institute (a political think tank). He is the originator of the Katowice-based BoMiasto association. Author of, among others: ‘Wariacje Tischnerowskie’ (2012), Kościół w czasach dobrej zmiany (The Church in Times of Good Change) (2021).

Bartosz Sadulski, writer and editor, author of three volumes of poetry and the novel Rzeszot, for which he received the Kościelski Award and was nominated for the Nike Literary Award and the Conrad Award. His latest book is entitled Szesnaście na Bourbon. He is the editor-in-chief of the quarterly HERITO. He has published essays in Tygodnik Powszechny and Dwutygodnik, among others. He was a scholarship holder of the Młoda Polska programme in the literature category in 2019. He lives in Nowa Huta.
