Whilst the first part of the course took place entirely in Kraków, the second part enabled participants to explore the issues of conservation and management of several completely different types of cultural landscape.

The programme included visits to the wooden churches of Lesser Poland inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: the churches in Lipnica Murowana and Sękowa, as well as the Orthodox church in Owczary, which forms part of a group of Orthodox churches in Poland and Ukraine currently being considered for inscription by both countries. Participants also learnt about the challenge of preserving First World War cemeteries established following the Battle of Gorlice in 1915; they visited the cemeteries in Łużna and at the Małastowska Pass, and met with the mayor of Gorlice – Witold Kochan – to discuss commemorating the centenary of the battle and the protection of the cemeteries.

The next stage of the course focused on cultural heritage sites in Slovakia and Hungary. In Slovakia, course participants took part in workshops on the urban cultural landscape of Košice. In Hungary, they learnt about the challenges of preserving the cultural landscape of the Tokaj region and the Hortobágy National Park.

In 2006, the ministers of culture of the Visegrad Group countries launched a permanent expert panel on cultural heritage, and the organisation of its activities was entrusted to the MCK. Regular meetings between representatives from the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary have resulted in the organisation of two academic conferences and four summer courses devoted to the management of sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in the Visegrad Group countries. These annual international training courses are aimed at staff from conservation services and cultural institutions, as well as non-governmental organisations involved in heritage conservation. Since 2009, they have provided a unique opportunity for the conservation community to come together and reflect collectively on the similar challenges facing all countries in the region in the field of cultural heritage conservation.

More about V4 Heritage Academy

photo: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 Hungary license.

The main theme of the summer course, held from 9 to 16 July 2012, was the cultural landscape, its conservation and management.
