Banner At a distance: Dream Galicia
Meeting with Larry Wolff and Łukasz Galusek
A-
A+

How did the Habsburg "invention" of Galicia come into being? What is the intellectual history of this idea? How much fantasy did it entail and to what extent did it come true? How for one hundred and fifty years the inhabitants of Galicia and the Empire played their roles – the roles of emperors and subjects, locals and strangers, lords and peasants.

Why, despite so many efforts to disguise an artificial creation as a natural being, was Galicia an impossible place? Why was it bound to come apart, and at the same time it is impossible to part with it? Who and why still dreams of Galicia? Who was the "ghostly Galician" whom Isaac Babel saw in 1920? Who is this "Galitzianer" a hundred years later? - these are the issues that Professor Larry Wolff talked about in an interview with Łukasz Galusek.

The broadcast of the event was available on the ICC Facebook profile.

The event was organised on the occasion of the launch of The idea of Galicia. History and Fantasy in Habsburg Political Culture , a book by Larry Wolff, published by the International Cultural Centre in the translation of Tomasz Bieroń.

Meeting in English.

The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and Sport.
