Drago Jančar - Archipelagos. A personal atlas of questions and experiences

The collection of essays of a Slovenian author who has been telling the story of his little nation for a half of century, touching topics that are close and understandable to many Central-Europeans.


This book contains older essays, such as “Atlas” and “The Soul of Europe,” as well as brand new – for example, the titular “The Archipelago of Yugoslavia,” alluding directly to “The Memories of Yugoslavia” – and very topical, such as “The Terrible Revenge,” containing reflections of Jančar from the first days of Russian invasion on Ukraine.

Drago Jančar takes the reader on a journey – not only among the islands of the Yugoslavian “archipelago,” but also to the Bosporus, on the fields of Flanders, and to Triest. It is also a journey in time – to Krakow of 1968, Warsaw of the 20th century 80s., Austrian Galicia of Joseph Roth, and the worlds of Ivo Andric and James Joyce.
