Churches and Monasteries of the 19th- and 20th-century Lviv. Part I, Vol. 12

A+
The volume comprises 22 monographic descriptions of monuments of religious art. (the palace of the Archbishop and Lviv cemeteries have been excluded from the research). Their architecture represents great variety of style – from early historism to the modern style. The publication is unique as it shows the forgotten aspect of modern sacral architecture of Lviv, and presents architectural surroundings of the city from its unknown side. The rapid development of Lviv in the 20th-century influenced creating new Roman-Catholic parishes which aimed at reinforcing Polish image of the city. Remarkable architectural activity took place in the years 1931-1939; it was supported by public collections, loans, bank credits, financial aid from state institutions, fund-raising events. The outbreak of the Second World War stopped many initiatives. When the war ended, the city found itself in a completely different political situation, and sacral buildings underwent many changes of function and purpose. The preface to the publication carefully examines and evaluates various artistic aspects of analysed monuments.
