Expanding the field of vision. Włodzimierz Puchalski’s artistic photography

Does the attentive eye of Włodzimierz Puchalski only reflect the nature of things, or does it see more, or see things differently? Is a naturalist able to see the observed world through an artistic lens to perceive something other than the laws of nature? We invited you to join our guests at a meeting dedicated to the reflection on the artistic aspect of Puchalski's photography.

We can still remember his photos from Kampinos, Tatra Mountains, and Lake Wigry, which resonated with bird songs and the rustle of reeds, sensing that they are something more than merely a documentary record of nature.

The camera, Puchalski's artistic medium of choice, was for him a vehicle that took him somewhere else, into the space of art. Offering an escape from the prison of the city, just like the desire to track wild birds, the camera allowed him to cross the boundaries of the ordinary and the everyday. If, as Puchalski noted, all the beauty of the world lasts too short, much must be done to extend it: through record and form.

It seems that Puchalski's photos show affinity with artistic practices of the Lviv avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s, and especially with the work of Henryk Mikolasch and Witold Romer. But is it really so?

This artistic component of Puchalski's photos requires a joint reflection. That is why on October 13 we invited you to a meeting with Wojciech Plewiński and Wojciech Nowicki, hosted by Monika Kozień.
