The images presented here show the cultural sources of the contemporary experience of time and transience. Invoking the era of Descartes and Voltaire, we focus on the existential aspects of transience. We find its traces in still lifes, allegorical representations of virtues and vices, images of ruins, and series of portraits. A twentieth-century counterpoint to the early modern engravings are the extremely sophisticated but at once powerful works by the Polish conceptualists Stanisław Dróżdż, Roman Opałka and Zygmunt Rytka, who capture the passage of time on the borderline between everyday perception and abstraction.
