The outcome of a symposium organized in June 1995 by the International Cultural Centre and the Slovak Institute in Warsaw (in co-operation with the Polish Ministry of Culture and Art and the Slovak Ministry of Culture). The conference was of an interdisciplinary nature; it focused on Polish-Slovak political relations from a historical perspective, analysed cultural relations and literary ties between the two nations, and looked at issues of cultural contact in the border area. The meeting demonstrated the extent of the friendship between Poles and Slovaks, emphasized linguistic and cultural similarities, showed the effect Polish literature had on the process of awakening Slovak national identity, and demonstrated the actual problems of and opportunities for present-day coexistence of both nations, especially in the border zone.
