Joseph Rykwert was declared the recipient of the 2014 Royal Gold Medal

On September 18, 2013 Joseph Rykwert, a celebrated architectural historian and critic, was declared the recipient of the 2014 Royal Gold Medal, i.e. the highest distinction awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Established in 1848, the Royal Gold Medal RIBA is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the field of architecture and is approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen. The prize is given annually to a single architect or a group of architects whose influence on architecture has had a truly international effect.

“What makes the gift doubly precious is that it does not come from my fellow-scriveners, but from architects and builders,” said Rykwert on hearing the news. “It suggests that what I have written has engaged their attention and been of use, even though I have never sought to be impartial but have taken sides, sometimes combatively. So I feel both elated and enormously grateful.”

The Seduction of Place. The History and Future of Cities is Professor Rykwert’s first book which has been translated into Polish. Published by the International Cultural Centre Publishing House, the book will be officially released on October 22, 2013.
