Prof. Jacek Purchla at the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee

Professor Jacek Purchla, President of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO, is taking part in the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee.

During almost two-week-long proceedings, chaired by Her Excellency Sheikha Haya Al Khalifa, there will be made decisions about the protection of crucial objects of cultural and natural heritage.

Bahrain – the venue of this year’s session – is one of the new members of the Committee, which includes representatives of 21 states from among 193 countries that ratified the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. At present, the following countries are represented in the Committee: Australia, Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, China, Guatemala, Hungary, Kirgizstan, Norway, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Spain, and Uganda.

The previous, 41st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee took place in July 2017 in Krakow, chaired by Professor Jacek Purchla. This event was considered a breakthrough, with its unique atmosphere and UNESCO’s opening to civic society and the NGOs. One of the related events was the World Heritage Young Professionals Forum, co-organised by the International Cultural Centre.
